Frequently Asked Questions

A few things you should know, darling… Below are the questions I hear most from Houston-area families. Don't see yours? Ask me directly — no question is too small. That's literally what I'm here for.

‍ ‍

What does a birth doula actually do?

‍ ‍

Think of me as your birth bestie — the experienced friend who's done this 130+ times and stays calm no matter what. I provide continuous physical, emotional, and informational support through pregnancy, labor, and birth: comfort techniques, position changes, help understanding your options, and steady reassurance for both you AND your partner. I'm not a medical provider and I never replace your OB, midwife, or nurses — I work alongside them so you can focus on the one job only you can do. You can be scared. I'm not. That's the whole point.

‍ ‍

What areas do you serve?

‍I serve families throughout the greater Houston area, including Katy, Fulshear, Cypress, Richmond, Tomball, Spring, Sugar Land, The Heights, and Sealy. Not sure if you're in range? Just ask — and if distance is a factor, my virtual birth support option might be the perfect fit.

‍ ‍

What hospitals do you attend births at?

‍I support births at hospitals throughout the Katy and greater Houston area, including Memorial Hermann Katy, Houston Methodist West, Methodist Willowbrook, Memorial Hermann Memorial City, Houston Methodist in The Med Center, The Woman's Hospital of Texas, and Texas Children's Pavilion for Women — plus birth centers and home births. Choosing where to give birth is a big decision; I wrote a full Houston-area hospital comparison to help. The best way to know if I support at your chosen location, just ask!

‍ ‍

How many clients do you take?

‍I intentionally take just 3 birth clients per 6 weeks. That's not a limitation — it's a promise. It means when your birth begins, you get all of me: rested, present, and fully yours. No juggling, no backup-doula roulette.

‍ ‍

Do you support VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean)?

Absolutely — VBAC support is one of my favorite parts of this work. VBAC mamas often carry extra fear and extra pressure, and having steady, knowledgeable support in the room matters enormously. We'll prepare together, build your questions for your provider, and I'll be right beside you the whole way.

‍ ‍

Do you support planned cesarean births?

‍Yes! Cesarean birth IS birth, and cesarean mamas deserve full support too — preparation beforehand, advocacy and calm in the OR where permitted, and dedicated recovery support afterward. Ask me about it.

‍ ‍

Will you replace my partner during the birth?

‍Never — I make your partner better at their job. Partners often feel enormous pressure to remember everything from childbirth class while watching the person they love work harder than they've ever seen. I take that pressure off. I guide them on where to stand, what to say, when to offer counterpressure — so they can be fully present instead of frantically Googling "how long is too long to push." Dads and partners are often my biggest fans afterward.

‍ ‍

When should I hire a doula?

‍Whenever you find the right one — but earlier is better. Most of my clients book in the second trimester, which gives us time for prenatal visits, birth preparation, and building real trust before the big day. That said, I've been hired at 38 weeks and even during labor. If you're reading this and you're 39 weeks pregnant: reach out anyway. (Remember: 3 clients per 6 weeks, so dates do fill.)

‍ ‍

What if you're out of my budget?

‍Please don't disappear — talk to me. I offer virtual birth support and custom packages, and I'm an approved provider with a registry service, which means friends and family can gift doula support instead of a third set of burp cloths. Every family deserves support, and I will always try to find a way.

‍ ‍

What payment options do you offer?

‍I know firsthand how valuable your hard-earned money is, so I keep this flexible:‍

  • Cash, credit, or debit card

  • FSA/HSA funds

  • AfterPay

  • Pay in full, split 2–6 ways, or pay monthly until 38 weeks

‍A portion of your package is due at signing as a commitment fee — it's non-refundable, reserves your date on my calendar, and goes toward your total. All packages are paid in full by 38 weeks. Pick the plan that works for your family; I am FLEXIBLE.

‍ ‍

Can I use my FSA or HSA to pay for doula services?

‍Yes! I accept FSA/HSA funds. Doula support is one of the smartest ways to use those dollars — check with your plan administrator about documentation, and I'm happy to provide whatever receipts or letters you need.

‍ ‍

Can I add postpartum support or photography to my birth package?

‍Yes, and you should ask about it — extra postpartum care, Golden Hour, and Fresh 48 sessions are all available as discounted add-ons to birth packages. Bundling means the person who supported your birth is the same familiar face in those first tender days.

‍ ‍

What if my birth doesn't go according to plan?

‍Then you will not face it alone — that's the entire point of having me there. Birth is powerful and unpredictable, and my job doesn't depend on things going "right." Whether plans change slowly or suddenly, I help you understand what's happening, ask the questions that matter, and stay anchored. Some of the births I'm proudest of are the ones that looked nothing like the birth plan.

Client Reviews

“My birth experience was nothing short of amazing, and I give so much credit to Alysa for helping me feel informed, empowered, and confident as a new mother. She didn’t just support me through labor, she helped prepare both of us for parenthood.

Thank you, Alysa. We are forever grateful for you.”

— Britney L.

During the six weeks Alysa supported us, I welcomed (and requested) that she make suggestions based on her experience, and I appreciated that she left all ultimate decisions up to me. She proved to be incredibly trustworthy and displayed true professionalism. I felt 100% comfortable turning the monitor off so that I could truly rest (not something I was able to do with my first). Not only did my husband and I look forward to her coming (which was ALWAYS early or on time), we also genuinely feel that Alysa’s presence helped with the transition so that we could dedicate 1:1 time to our daughter. Not to mention that my daughter LOVED her and continues to ask about her to this day!

The best thing I ever did for myself throughout my pregnancy and postpartum was hiring Brave Birth Co. Alysa is a birth bestie rockstar! Educated my husband and me on what was going to happen and reminded me during labor of what was going to be happening next. She guided me to ask questions to my OB when I felt certain things weren’t necessary. Gave me the resources I needed to help put my birth plan into action. She’s been a godsend for me through this whole first-time motherhood journey, and we plan on hiring her again for the next journey. Never once did I ever feel judged for asking a question or for the choices I was making for my baby and me. Beyond grateful for her.

  • Bringing Alysa on to our birth team was probably the best decision we made throughout my pregnancy! From day one she was so incredibly helpful, supportive, and provide so many different resources/information. I always felt comfortable reaching out for questions and I never once felt like I was being judged for my pregnancy/birth choices - which was very important to me when picking a doula. With her on our team, my partner and I felt much more confident going into the birth. I was also incredibly grateful she was at the birth as she was someone we could turn to if we had questions and she helped walk me through contractions and each step of the birthing process. She worked great with the hospital staff as well, and overall created a wonderful birth experience, as well as ongoing support postpartum. All around, we are so grateful for her support and highly recommend her services for anyone considering a doula!

  • I searched for a doula because my husband and I had no idea what to expect in oregnancy and beyond. I am so glad that I found Alysa. She helped prepare us for labor and answered so many questions throughout the pregnancy. She was also excellent throughout delivery. She was there to help and support me while my husband and mother in law were able to destress and take breaks. And now I have post partum visits to look forward to. If you are wanting a source of education, support, and care during your pregnancy and labor, I highly recommend Alysa

  • Bringing on Alysa was one of the best and easiest decisions we made preparing for birth & our little one. Alysa was amazing! We signed on with her rather late, but she was thorough and took the time to make sure we were as prepared as we could be for delivery. I really can't imagine having done the delivery without her support and guidance which continued through the postpartum period. Alysa is like a big sister and friend who just happens to have evidence backed information to help you make the decisions you need to during this period of one million choices. As a new mom she helped me feel supported, provided reassurance, and helped us feel so much better prepared. If/when we have our next little one, I'll be reaching out again for her support.

  • Alysa is the #1 most important investment we made in preparation for having our first child— she is incredible!!! From the moment we started working with her, we felt taken care of and educated on all of the decisions and options we had in both labor and delivery and the postpartum period. She tailored everything to our needs (including making a carefully organized binder with all of the evidence-based birth studies my data-loving brain could ever hope for) and went above and beyond to help us understand what would go on during labor and in the actual delivery room. For my husband, a first-time dad, Alysa empowered him to feel confident and fully participate in the process. Not only that, she advocated on our behalf during labor and helped us navigate any challenges that arose, helping us stay true to our plans for birth and making the day we brought our girl into the world the actual best day of our lives. I cannot emphasize enough how worthwhile this investment is…Alysa changed everything for us. We feel so lucky to have found her and she will be our first call when we get pregnant again!

  • Alysa is my guardian angel! I came to her early in pregnancy when I was terrified of giving birth. Every time we met she taught me so much and calmed all of my fears with love and care. She also helped my husband understand how I was feeling and how he could help. During the birth she never left my side, was an advocate for me and helped me be comfortable and confident. And now even postpartum she is supporting me! Getting her as a doula and taking her childbirth classes was the best thing I could do for my pregnancy and my new little family.
